The UBE Biennale after the Biennale of Venice and Sao Paolo, occupy the third place in age and prestige in the world. Began in 1960 in the botanic garden Tokiwa within the framework of a big green campaign titled `'Bandage of city with flowers'' with aim to heal the environmental and social wounds that, the rapid industrial and economic growth had left in the region, after the Second World War. Since then and almost for 50 years, Ube Biennale offered the realisation of a Museum and Park of contemporary Sculpture which extends in the all city with hundreds open-air works and gather the international interesting as a debut of election for the sculptors of all world.

The “Radiation ” of Georgios Rachoutis, compose a sculptural installation of four metres height and of two metres width. Four vertical transparent levels of acrylic resin, symbolize the energy and the balance between forces of sky and ground. Horizontal stainless pipes represent radioactive rays. They penetrate the transparent surfaces and reflecting the light, they give the sense of a hovering permanent threat above the landscape that is mirrored on the transparencies. The work constitutes a conjectural reference in the criminal fact of throwing the two atomic bombs in Japan, and in the disastrous repercussions of radioactivity that are continued up to today.

The work was financed by the Museum Tokiwa and was manufactured in the laboratories Ueno

 and Morichika in Ube

For the needs of install ting the work Giorgos Rachoutis travelled and stayed in the distant Japan for 10 days. He declares charmed by the culture and the politeness of this country.

''I remained in Japan for a little time, but it was enough to meet and admire the cultural level.
It is a big honour to me the choice for my participation in the 23rd UBE Biennale `09, but still bigger honour is the friendship that been born and was developed, through the process of the manufacture of my work, with the Artist, Architect, Visionary and Director of the Biennale Akira Sasaki. I dedicated my sculpture in this friendship, as well as a diachronic homage, in all the victims of the atomic radioactivity, that paid and continue to pay with their life, the devastating intolerance, in Hiroshima and in Nagasaki, that abstain hardly few kilometres from the city Ube.
Unfortunately after so many years that have passed since the experience of such a tragic experience, the nuclear arsenals of all over the world, have not been abolished, but are upgraded using for alibi the world safety.
With the hope that the humanity will never again live a similar disastrous fact, I wish my work to transmit in the city, all the sentiments of love, friendship, fraternization and appreciation that I feel for the population of Japan''.
